Position Summary

The Financial/Business Analyst performs a variety of duties focusing on developing technical and financially focused solutions to advance the College’s mission within each operating department. This position is responsible for working with departments to analyze their budget and spending history and to compare those analytics to industry trends – focusing on cost effective ways to reduce spending, consolidate functions and achieve a competitive advantage amongst our peers.

Description of Key Responsibilities

1. Working with each College department, develop technical and financially focused solutions to advance the College’s mission within each department.
2. Review and identify all financial data of the College, focusing on duplication of services or programs; and advocate for cost-effective or cost-reducing solutions to meet the College’s mission.
3. Creates and advances financial and decision-making models and prepares ad-hoc analysis to support critical initiatives of the College.
4. Create monthly spend analysis reports with observations and external benchmarks for each department at the College.
5. Reviews practices and procedures and implements efficiencies where appropriate.
6. Develops annual budgets, projections, and various other ad-hoc analyses as needed.
7. Produces monthly financial performance reports detailing variance analyses to budget and forecast.
8. Analyzes trends in revenues and expenses to create monthly operating margin and cash balance forecasts.
9. Assist in annual audit.
10. Complies reports, reviews and distributes to management.
11. Develops new reports based on the need of leadership and/or strategic initiatives.
12. Identifies and reports on anomalies in financial and statistical information.
13. Researches models, and performs analytics on business metrics, proformas, and prospective future endeavors.
14. Maintains working knowledge of key performance indicators that affect the College such as new initiatives, payment systems, rules and regulations, etc.
15. Works with all levels in the College to ensure the data integrity represents the true operations of the College.
16. Performs other related duties and tasks as appropriately assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Expert knowledge of analysis of financial data and financial reports is required.
2. Ability to collect, organize and analyze significant amounts of information quickly.
3. Ability to transform data into dashboards and user friendly visuals.
4. Experience in analyzing existing business processes, identifying areas for process improvement, then translating into cohesive procedures.
5. Ability to quickly grasp knowledge of the College organization and operation, including the financial accounting systems and procedures in place.
6. Ability to deal with numerous projects, in various stages of completion, concurrently, in an environment where interruptions regarding requests for information are routinely experienced. This requires a person who is well organized, detail oriented, flexible and able to effectively prioritize tasks.
7. Ability to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with persons both internal and external to the College, both on the telephone and in person.
8. Ability to work effectively as a member of a small staff where teamwork and cooperation are the rule and customer service is a priority.
9. Knowledge of and ability to use database management, spreadsheet applications and word processing applications.
10. Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in a manner consistent with professional standards.
11. Ability to apply mathematical skills necessary for such tasks as extending quantities, preparing calculations, and compiling, summarizing and analyzing data.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Financial/Business Analyst will be a self-motivated individual who possesses appropriate educational background and professional experience to function in a complex business office environment. This person will be detail minded with a good problem solving aptitude, maintain a strong communication skills and have a robust business acumen, ready to adapt in a challenging and changing industry. This position will require a strong working knowledge and understanding of organizational design, accounting and general ledger systems as well as IT systems and internal controls is also needed.


A master’s degree in Finance/Accounting or other business-related field is required. CPA preferred, Lean Process or Project Management Certifications also preferred.

A combination of education/training and experience will also be considered.


Minimum of five years of progressive experience working as a Financial or Business Analyst. Preferably in a non-profit or higher education institution.
