Description of Job Duties

The Graduate Assistant for the Office of Veteran & Military Student Services will be responsible for assisting the Director in all areas of program operation, including, but not limited to: budgeting, alumni and agency donations to the program, alumni and veteran outreach, orientation, mentoring of current student veterans, academic progress, leadership development programming, special event planning and overseeing the Student Veterans Alliance (new student organization).

The GA’s experiences working in higher education will translate directly to the MBA curriculum. The assigned tasks will include opportunities to develop a marketing plan for our program to active and recently separated veterans, assist in developing a budget for the program, collaborate with other agencies/organizations including Illinois Joining Forces, Veterans Higher Education Affinity Group, Student Veterans of America, strategic management of program resources and participants, strategic decision making and developing a financial accounting system for the Veteran Services Coordinator to use to track expenditures and incoming funds from the VA (Veteran Affairs), Department of Defense, and outside agencies.

For the Master of Leadership Studies candidate, the GA position offers a unique leadership role. The GA will have daily opportunities to refine his/her leadership skills through interactions with prospective, current, alumni and community veterans and ROTC cadets and ROTC senior military leadership personnel. These daily interactions create opportunities for problem solving, conflict resolution, increasing engagement among constituents and providing constructive feedback – all important skills for any leadership position .

Job Qualifications

Education/Training: Admission into a graduate degree program at North Central College is required. Graduate programs that best compliment this assistantship is Master of Leadership Studies, Master of Business Administration.

Preferred Qualifications
Veteran or Veteran-connected
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work autonomously & as a team member
Ability to break an assigned project down into parts, establish timelines, and follow tasks through to completion
Desire to utilize research, best practices, & assessment to create student –focused programs and events
Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs and social media platforms
