Position Summary

The Director of Campus Safety has overall responsibility for the Department of Campus Safety at North Central College which includes maintaining a safe and secure campus environment, managing parking enforcement, leading crisis/emergency preparedness efforts, and providing for compliance-related reporting. The director provides leadership, guidance, and education for campus community members on safety and security issues and serves as the College’s liaison with all local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

Description of Key Responsibilities

1. Manage the Department of Campus Safety, which is a 24/7/365 operation. Develop and implement an overall campus safety plan and generate the goals, objectives, and timelines to accomplish the plan.

2. Recruit, select, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate campus safety personnel, including students and professionals. Direct the professional and student staff in accomplishing the mission and goals of the department, the division, and the College. Develop a team that is positive, responsive, prepared, and professional.

3. Represent North Central College in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, faculty, staff, and the entire community we serve. Foster excellent working relationships and interact effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and guests. Facilitate strong working relationships with the Naperville Police Department, the Naperville Fire Department and other emergency personnel/leadership for the city of Naperville.

4. Provide leadership for the College’s Crisis Task Force. Assist in regular fire inspections, emergency drills (fire, severe weather), crisis planning, table-top training exercises, and other educational programs as necessary.

5. Report crime statistics as required by Federal, State, and local government entities in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and other laws. Compose additional compliance reports necessary by law. Keep abreast of current legislation concerning higher education and campus safety and ensure campus compliance with all legal requirements.

6. Perform, direct, or oversee the investigation of all campus accidents, injuries, student handbook violations, Title IX investigations, and crimes while maintaining privacy/confidentiality for all parties, as appropriate. Keep a daily log of campus crime for inspections and provide incident reports/investigative reports to parties with a “need to know.” Serve as the chief communicator in sharing information with law enforcement agencies in the course of such investigations and as appropriate.

7. Ensure that all written reports/notes on investigations/incidents are up to date, accurate, professional, and thorough.

8. Serve as a consultant for students who have been victims of a crime and/or are participating in student conduct, Title IX, or law enforcement investigations. Provide guidance for students who are using the court system for various reasons, including to obtain orders of protection.

9. Represent campus safety on various campus committees, task forces, and in the local community. For example, sit on the Behavioral Intervention Team for the College and/or represent the department in crisis planning exercises. Serve as an active member of the College’s Green Dot program to end power-based personal violence.

10. Develop and execute a curriculum for the training of campus safety officers and keep accurate records of the training and development of the campus safety personnel.

11. Develop and maintain a comprehensive set of policies, procedures, and protocols for campus safety. Evaluate current safety practices and make adjustments as necessary. Thoroughly train campus safety staff on each of these policies and procedures.

12. Employ technology related solutions with regard to safety/security matters. Evaluate and explore new technology to determine usefulness in the College environment and train others to use technological efforts (i.e. Maxient).

13. Serve in an emergency on-call duty rotation and respond to unexpected emergency/crisis situations. Ensure 24-hour administrative on-call coverage of all serious incidents and activities that occur within the College. Provide leadership in coordinating College wide efforts during large-scale crises.

14. Establish a system for distribution of important written campus safety material, announcements, safety bulletins, and other prevention information. Develop and distribute other written materials related to personal safety, crime prevention, and parking.

15. Coordinate North Central’s campus safety educational programs. Work cooperatively with Naperville Police Department, student affairs, business operations staff, and the Naperville Fire Department to accomplish this task.

16. Develop a comprehensive system of enforcement and accounting of all parking regulations and ticket revenues. Regularly report on campus parking practices and trends.

17. Assist North Central community members with safety and parking needs for special events, meetings, and programs.

18. Manage the campus safety budget. Provide reports and recommendations on budgetary matters.

19. Regularly test emergency, alarm devices and control panels. Provide reports on the level of safety provided by these alarms.

20. Perform other related duties as assigned by designated supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Knowledge of campus and community resources as they relate to campus safety.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of legislative/reporting mandates, practices, policies, and procedures impacting campus security and safety, including the Clery Act, Title IX, FERPA, and others.

3. Ability to demonstrate patience, empathy in a highly relational, service-oriented, yet challenging and fast-paced, environment.

4. The ability to balance daily demands and unexpected situations with the need to plan for the future.

5. Ability to quickly and accurately develop professional reports and grants.

6. Ability to relate well to, serve as a role model for, and advise a wide variety of students and their personal development.

7. Ability to maintain privacy/confidentiality of records, reports, and incidents as guided by applicable law.

8. Ability to develop and implement written policies and procedures for campus safety personnel.

9. Ability to analyze data and present material in a professional fashion.

10. Knowledge of information technology related to campus safety.

11. Experience establishing collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, and outside constituency groups.

12. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in a manner consistent with professional standards.

13. Evidence of high energy, creativity, attention to detail and the ability to effectively foster positive change within an organization.

14. Ability to quickly grasp knowledge of the College organization and operation especially as it relates to campus safety.

15. Successful completion of a background check approved by the Office of Human Resources.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Director of Campus Safety provides the leadership necessary to develop and maintain a safe campus community. The director must be able to create an overall plan for campus safety at North Central College and must be able to implement programs, policies, procedures, protocols, and training mechanisms that provide for a safe campus environment. The director must be an expert at hiring, directing, motivating, training and supervising a staff of professionals and students. The director must be able to work collaboratively with law enforcement agencies and all areas of the campus community including faculty, staff, students, and guests. The director must have the ability to evaluate, learn, and train others on new technological solutions as they relate to campus safety.


Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, with an advanced degree preferred or a combination of education and experience equivalent.


Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in campus safety, security, law enforcement, or higher education administration with at least 3 years of supervisory experience, assessment of training needs and staffing, and analyzing the effectiveness of policies/procedures within a college environment is preferred. Experience in campus safety in a higher education setting is preferred. A minimum of 40 hours of formal protective services training, to include certification in emergency first aid and CPR is preferred.

Licenses or Certifications

Valid driver’s license is required.
