Position Summary

Partnering with the support and systems teams, the network engineer is heavily involved with identifying, prioritizing, and resolving critical network related issues that impact college operations. In addition, the engineer proactively seeks to communicate solutions to network related issues and preferred emerging technologies that can be used to improve the overall health of the college network.

Directs and manages network operations for the college. Leads efforts in the area of wired and wireless networking, network security, including: network behavior analytics, firewall, Network Access Control (NAC), Virtual Private Networking (VPN), Anti-virus(AV) and Intrusion Detection System (IDS). Provide direction for critical operations and monitoring of CBORD, the College’s one card system.

Description of Key Responsibilities

1. Work, review progress and quality of deliverables, evaluate performance and technical capabilities of the network. Establish priorities for improvement and develop and implement improvement plans.

2. Support the technology that provides services to academic and administrative data network users. Assure operational stability of the network. Maintain, install, update and manage network components, including; firewall, backup system, network management, Internet connectivity and TCP/IP operability, security, VPN, and virus protection systems.

3. Monitor trends of utilization and problems to help anticipate needs. Troubleshoots and resolves all expedited issues impacting the college.

4. Install, configure, maintain and support network hardware such as Ethernet switches, routers, bandwidth shapers, load balancers, uninterrupted power sources, wireless controllers, and access points.

5. Provide network project management for staff and faculty support. Coordinate with the Help Desk administrator to organize, prioritize, assign, and follow through to completion any Help Desk call requiring network intervention.

6. Participate in determination of the feasibility of adding, and/or changing data network resources. Evaluate various alternatives, and make recommendations, ensuring alignment with college needs, to the Director of Technology Infrastructure.

7. Work in conjunction with all other members of Information Technology Services staff. Provides proactive and professional communication and fosters mutual respect with all campus entities.

8. Install configure, maintain and support connection to multiple Internet Service Providers.

9. Maintain and manage the CBORD one card system as well as the siren, CCTV, and radio systems.

10. Maintain campus cabling plant, terminate and test Ethernet cabling.

11. Other job-related duties as appropriately assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Proficiency in UNIX, Linux, current version of Windows Operating System and server software, TCP/IP and other Internet protocols.

2. Proficiency in physical layer of network, including switches, routers, bridges, etc.

3. Ability to work both as a team member and independently, depending on the nature of the task, and provide excellent customer service skills. Maintains poise under pressure and comfortable with ambiguity.

4. Ability to communicate in the English language and to consistently demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills in dealing with persons both internal and external to the College, for example systems integration vendor’s engineers, consultants and technical support personnel of various hardware and software vendors.

5. Ability to deal with several tasks and work with a large number of individuals concurrently; requiring a person who is well organized, detail oriented, flexible and able to effectively prioritize tasks.

6. Ability and willingness to pursue additional training and to share such new knowledge to enhance the functionality and resources of the campus-wide network.

Distinguishing Characteristics

All features of the network, including infrastructure, multiple servers and client/workstations must be functional in order to enable users in faculty and staff offices and students in labs and residence halls to use the resources for teaching, learning and administrative services. May have to work outside normal working hours to deal with events affecting connectivity and security.


A bachelor’s degree, in computer science or a related field or relevant experience.


Five plus years’ experience in networking, routing, switches and firewall configuration using common CLI and GUI networking platforms and the management analysis systems associated with those networks. Experience with 802.11 a/b/g/n/x/ac wireless networking, WPA2, RADIUS, and security certificates. Experience with VMware environment, design, configuration, and administration. Experience with Windows server builds and administration. Experience with Linux server builds and administration. Experience with VPN protocols including IPSEC, VPN, and SSL.

Preferred Skills: Previous experience with application virtualization, system backup, configuring CISCO network devices desired. Experience in higher education preferred. Cisco certifications desired. In-depth knowledge of the OSI model.
