Position Summary

To provide academic advising assistance to undergraduate students, serve as a transfer advisor, and help coordinate advising initiatives across campus.

Description of Key Responsibilities

1. Serve as an academic advisor for undergraduate students from a variety of majors, including students who have not yet declared a major. Assisting students with class selection and curricular planning so that they may complete requirements efficiently and in a manner most appropriate to each individual, while at the same time adhering to any departmental and college policies. Provide students with introductory information about how to use resources and access policies that may immediately impact their integration into the North Central community (such as the use of Merlin, campus email, the waitlist policy, online catalog, etc.). Ensure students are aware of departmental/program mentoring initiatives.

2. Maintain files containing demographic and academic information about advisees.

3. Coordinate advising activities with the admissions office, the registrar’s office, Student Affairs staff, other advisors and departments and programs.

4. Work with the Director of Student Academic Success Programs to develop a student success plan for students demonstrating academic difficulty.

5. Serve as a resource for all undergraduate students with general advising questions.

6. Maintain advising records and assist with analysis of advising data, including developing transition plans for students as the college moves to semesters.

7. Attend APPC, school/college meetings and other campus meetings as needed to stay abreast of curriculum and college policy requirements.

8. Work with the Associate Dean for Student Success and the college/school Deans to develop, maintain and disseminate advising planning material, coordinate, publicize and conduct advising workshops, and develop and implement advising assessment plans.

9. Coordinate the use of social media outlets (Twitter, Facebook, Blackboard, etc.) to deliver advising information.

10. Serve as a liaison to various offices to establish partnerships across campus in support of initiatives and programs for student success.

11. Participate in professional development workshops and conferences.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Ability to consistently demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with a wide variety of people both internal and external to the College, both on the telephone and in person. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment where cooperation and teamwork are essential.

2. Knowledge of theories of student development and theories and practices of academic advising.

3. Ability to provide academic advising to students, so as to encourage retention and assist them in completing their studies in a manner that is most appropriate to each student while at the same time adhering to departmental and college policies.

4. Extensive knowledge of the organization and operation of the College, both administratively and academically.

5. Ability to deal with several tasks and work concurrently with a large number of individuals, each with distinctive needs and characteristics, usually without direct supervision, and to develop a detailed academic plan which is consistent with North Central College and departmental requirements for each student. This requires a person who is well organized, detail-oriented, flexible, and able to effectively prioritize tasks.

6. Ability to apply mathematical skills necessary for such tasks as converting data from transcripts issued by other institutions into North Central College format.

7. Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in a manner consistent with professional standards, including conducting in-depth interviews, making oral presentations to groups, and contributing to the development of high quality written materials which reflect positively on the College.

8. Ability to efficiently use computer-based systems, particularly word-processing, spreadsheets and databases.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Academic advising is an integral and important component of the College’s operation. Academic advisors are the primary source of information for students regarding college and major graduation requirements, college rules, policies, and resources. Students will work with their academic advisor to develop a four-year academic plan. By providing effective individualized and group academic advising, the individual in this position has considerable impact on the educational experiences of students. In addition to possessing an extensive knowledge of college policies and programs, both administrative and academic, this individual must be able to consistently demonstrate strong interpersonal skills particularly when working with students in individual or group settings and with other members of the campus community. Advisors work collaboratively with faculty to deliver on the advising outcomes for students.

The duties of this position at times require evening and/or weekend work.


A baccalaureate degree, preferably in the liberal arts or in a professional program with a strong liberal arts component, is required. Graduate work or completion of a post-baccalaureate program is highly desirable.


Previous advising experience is required. Experience as a non-traditional student and/or in teaching non-traditional students would be helpful.
